The Importance of Self Belief: Get it, Use it

Quick! What is your favorite motivational quote?

We all have them, but we usually wait for the wrong time to use them.

Self-belief quotes and affirmations can be a nice way to try to reset energy, but they can take a little while to be effective. You may wonder why it is important to believe in yourself. The simple answer is that no one else will do it the way you can.

While your family will generally believe in you to a certain extent, they tend to offer less support when the going gets tough. This is not because they don't care about you or love you - it is just because they have lost hope in your vision and don't know what to do.

While this doesn't always happen, it happens often enough to cause conflict. An example, of course, is when a spouse or parents initially give you support on a new venture. If the venture does not work out on the first try or does not go exactly how they thought it would, they might express frustration from your lack of progress and change their opinion about whether or not you should continue with it. If you start doubting yourself, this can be problematic for your business idea or vision because your motivation to carry on could potentially be affected.

Whenever a new venture begins, people are initially optimistic and will support you. But when the prospects for a business become less clear, that sense of excitement can quickly die down, especially in situations where your or their livelihood is at stake. The feeling of uncertainty is difficult, and for people who have not yet done their own self-development work, it will be a challenge to know how to handle their internal fears, which they might project onto you instead of processing within themselves.

The problem is that the path toward success for big adventures sometimes needs to be made straight. In fact, the risk makes an emerging enterprise successful - the newness can be the catalyst. This is why risk should be welcomed, not feared, celebrated and supported, not abandoned. At the very least, you should be encouraged.

The fear of the unknown may start to creep into your psyche simply because of the company you keep.

It's easier to listen to your family and friends tell you to dissolve your venture because it is failing. They will continue down this negative path until you decide to stop. If you do choose to give up on your business, they will tell you that it wasn't meant to be and that starting a business is challenging. Two cliche statements that have been allowed as the eulogy of one two many attainable but pre-abandoned dreams.

That time is precisely the moment that you shouldn't stop. People never get ahead by quitting. If you believed in yourself, you would have had the conviction to see it through. You would have the proper flow of energy to give you the strength to surge ahead.

But by giving in to the doubt of others, your belief in self is given over to their control. Had you kept the faith in yourself, you could have carried yourself to victory - done it all while telling your family and friends to have some faith.

A firm belief in yourself would give you the courage to stand up to them, step over your doubt, and do whatever you needed to do to win.

Whatever venture you decide to pursue, know that you will win by persisting to the finish line.

Surround yourself with emotionally healthy people but also learn to stand on your own.

Think of Thomas Edison's contribution to the lightbulb. While he did not invent the lightbulb (contrary to popular belief), he made ones that lasted longer. Imagine if he decided to quit after he ran into a few stumbling blocks in the early days.

Be the Edison of your story. If you’re not building the first one, build the best one and do it for yourself.
